In the opening sequence of that celebrated movie ‘Twelve O’Clock High’, an American veteran revisits the airbase in England from which his unit operated. The field is now deserted, apart from a few cows, but the bleak desolate scene has an evocative effect on the returnee. In his mind’s eye the place becomes alive again with the thundering roar of bombers going to war.
Now crumbling or in most cases hardly recognisable as one-time airfields, there still remains a strange fascination about these sad places .. long after the battle.
